A call for conversion: from living as conquerors to living as creatures
What does it mean to belong to a place when the ground beneath you--and the air around you-- is shifting? In This Ground Holy, Sarah Holcomb reflects on the challenges facing a generation of young Christians--a warming earth, flaring anxiety, and increasingly fragmented lives--and invites readers to root down to find renewal.
Weaving together scripture, ecological wisdom, and reporting from Appalachia to Tanzania, Holcomb draws out how climate change is evidence of a deeper, spiritual problem. Holcomb traces how colonization and consumerism uprooted God's people from the family of creation, leaving us with a wounded planet, a compromised gospel, and a generation hungry for a more abundant life.
From here, we can grow a new story, starting with an "ecological conversion"--reawakening to ourselves as creatures made by God from dust and breath, kin to the trees and rivers and neighbors whose lives are bound up with our own.
Honest about grief, unflinching about injustice, and anchored in the hope of the gospel, This Ground Holy is an invitation to reconnect with the rest of creation and to allow ourselves to be transformed. For what is the fear that the Earth is dying, if not a call to come alive?
