In Mixed Identities and the People of God, biblical scholar Rubin James Yi McClain explores ethnicity and identity in the ancient world, arguing that multiethnic identities are not peripheral to the biblical story but integral to God's vision for the church.
Drawing on New Testament biblical scholarship, Greco-Roman sources, and the broader ancient world, McClain examines how ethnicity and identity were understood, constructed, and contested. Through close readings of figures such as Herod, the Samaritans, Timothy, and Jesus' own genealogy, he shows that mixed and multiethnic identities shaped how ancient people understood themselves and who belonged. This fresh reading of Scripture illuminates contemporary conversations about race, ethnicity, and belonging.
What you'll find in Mixed Identities and the People of God:
- How God's plan throughout history has always included multiethnic realities
- How ancient sources can enrich and deepen our modern conversations about what it means to live between cultures
- Practical application for contemporary churches to become more inclusive spaces for those with multiethnic identities
