The word "synodality" means "journey together." For Pope Francis, synodality is "an expression of the Church's nature, her form, style, and mission." And yet, now several years on this synodal path, it remains an ecclesiology in need of a theology. This work, drawing on the voices of many of Africa's leading Catholic theologians, is a response to that need, clarifying and deepening the understanding, knowledge, and practice of synodality in the local churches.
Among the topics explored: the parallels between synodality and aspects of African spirituality and culture, including the concept of palaver and Ubuntu; the synodal implications of the Trinity; scriptural foundations and ecclesiological implications; the role of young people and women, and implications for authority and a listening church.
These reflections are a gift to the wider church, showing uniquely African ways of being community and doing things that can enhance the emergence of a synodal church and a true theology of synodality.
