The Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the most famous building in Utah.
Requiring 40 years of construction, the sacred, Gothic-looking shrine was completed on April 6, 1893, and is the centerpiece to Temple Square, Utah's most visited tourist site. Church members believe erecting a temple in the Salt Lake Valley fulfilled Old Testament prophesies of a lofty sacred edifice at a high elevation. The stone temple, hewn from the quartz monzonite (similar to granite) of the Wasatch Mountains, underwent an extensive, six-plus-year renovation, from December 2019 to the spring of 2027 and is now seismic resistant. Church president Brigham Young once said he wanted to see the temple built so well, that it would endure through the millennium. Extensive symbolism adorns the outside and the inside of this holy icon.
